Vietnam is advancing in gene editing technology to enhance the quality of crops, focusing on improving resistance to pests, diseases, and adverse weather conditions. Notable projects include enhancing salt tolerance in rice, reducing indigestible sugars in soybeans, and increasing sugars and amino acids in tomatoes. The country is also studying gene functions in rice and cucumbers, with the use of CRISPR/Cas gene editing technology. The legal framework for gene-edited crops in Asian countries, particularly in Southeast Asia, is being reviewed and updated, with the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore already approving the use and trade of gene-edited crops. Europe and some African countries are also revising their guidelines on gene-edited crops.
