Colombia, the world's second-largest producer of Arabica coffee, faces a challenge as most of its production is exported, leaving insufficient supply for domestic consumption. Despite producing 1.34 million bags in October 2024, an increase of 16% from the previous year, the country still imported 44,000 bags due to the lower quality and lower cost of robusta coffee imported from other countries. The majority of Colombian coffee is exported, with 95% being high-quality Arabica coffee, while the domestic market consumes mainly lower-quality robusta blends. A project to cultivate robusta in non-traditional coffee-growing areas aims to decrease imports and diversify the coffee portfolio, potentially benefiting 32,000 farms and covering 80,000 hectares.
