W19: Strawberry Update

In W19 in the strawberry landscape, Chinese strawberry production is concentrated mainly in the east and south of China, in Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Fujian. New varieties of pink and white garden strawberries have appeared in the Chinese market and were introduced in Dandong County. The strawberry cultivation area in Dandong is approximately 6.7K hectares, and the yield reaches 150K tons. New white garden strawberry varieties include Mengzhiying and Angel 8. The Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare of China stated there is no specific timeline for deciding whether to ease the ban on pesticide residues commonly used on Japanese strawberries. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received a request from Japan to establish maximum residue limits for Chlorfenapyr and Flonicamid.

In the United States, strawberry growers in East Texas have faced damage from freezes in recent years, but the situation is improving. The rainfalls have resulted in significant yield increases and better-quality strawberries. Cold weather was favorable for strawberry growth as it helped develop crowns and flowers, growers expect that temperatures do not reach extreme highs to avoid slowing down flower production. Peru exported 3.35K tons of strawberries in April 2023, an increase of 168% compared to the 1.25K tons shipped in the same period in 2022. Peruvian strawberries reached eight countries, Guatemala (35%) and the United States (21%) were the main destinations. The Head of the Agricultural Research Center of Egypt and a representative from the University of Florida in the United States have signed a cooperation protocol to establish a scientific excellence and research center for new varieties of strawberries in Egypt and Africa. This initiative aims to provide Egypt with the best strawberry varieties and seedlings for cultivation and export. Egypt has emerged as the leading exporter of fresh garden strawberries to the Malaysian market by the end of the 2021/22 season and continued to increase its supplies in the 2022/23 season. Egypt has made progress in the Southeast Asian market and now holds the fifth position among exporters in this region. In the district of İskilip in Çorum, Turkey, 250K strawberry seedlings were distributed to 130 local farmers.

The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of Australia (DAFQ) and a horticultural research team plan to launch a project to develop varieties of garden strawberries harvested by robots. The selection work is expected to last four years and requires funding of USD 11.5M. On the other hand, in the wholesale market of Bronisze, Poland, the first batches of domestic strawberries stood at USD 5.52-7.68/kg (PLN 23-32/kg). Lastly, the first strawberries of the Ukraine season arrived at the Mukachevo wholesale market, priced at USD 5.42/kg (UAH 200/kg).
