In Europe, the Prices for Large Onions Are Extreme (Jan 17)
In the Belgian onion market, the price increased due to crop failure, onion stocks are limited, and the large sizes required for processing are scarce. Onions suffered during the growing season, the summer heat and the rain that followed did not benefit the crop. Much of it was not suitable for long-term storage, many batches had to be sold before the New Year. The demand from Poland increased the prices. According to processors, the shortage of large calibers will last until March, when imported onions of the new crop will arrive.

The authorities of Kazakhstan have decided to ban the export of onions for three months to prevent the mass export of onions from Kazakhstan and to stabilize local prices. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported the demand of third countries for Kazakh onions is related to the natural disasters in Pakistan. Additional pressure on the cost is also severe frosts in the southern regions of Kazakhstan and in Uzbekistan, where a large amount of production was spoiled.

New Zealand
In 2023, New Zealand’s Onion Harvest Will Be Delayed by 3-4 Weeks Due to Rainy Weather (Jan 16)
As onion production experienced severe shortages globally, the situation worsened in New Zealand due to a very wet harvest season. Most farmers must wait for their soils to dry before they enter their fields to harvest. It resulted in significant harvest delays that, depending on the weather, would push back the export season by 3–4 weeks. Due to the terrible weather, they also anticipate significant quality issues. Peru exported 39.1K tons of sweet yellow onions, and 1.45K containers of 27 tons each, from July to December 2022. Exports are in line with the last season, with half a month before the end of the 2022/23 season. The United States purchased between 80-85% of these volumes. The second most important destination is Europe, mainly Spain.
