In W34 in the grapefruit landscape, the global grapefruit production for the 2022/23 season is expected to be reduced by 2% year-over-year (YoY), totaling around 6.8 million tons. This decline is attributed to unfavorable weather conditions and reduced production in primary countries such as China, Mexico, Turkey, and the United States (US).
This 2022/23 season, there has been a significant decline in grapefruit imports from China, attributed to lower demand, likely influenced by economic pressures. South African grapefruit producers avoided exporting any processed grade fruit. Still, prices in China remained stagnant at USD 13.72 to 17.83/15 kilogram (kg) carton (RMB 100 to 130/15kg carton), despite a temporary increase in exports. Similarly, the demand for grapefruits in the Japanese market dropped by approximately 25%, while South African mealybug rejections decreased the grapefruit exports to South Korea.
