Blueberry

China: Low Demand for Chilean Blueberries in Guangzhou Market During W5 (Feb 1)

Chilean blueberries in the Guangzhou wholesale market were in low demand in W5. The low demand is attributed to the low quality of the fruit and the end of the Chinese New Year holiday. The selling prices of 16mm Chilean blueberries in W5 stood as follows:

High-quality: USD 16.30/1.5kg (RMB 110/1.5kg),

Average: USD 13.34-14.82/1.5kg(RMB 90-100/1.5kg)

Below average: USD 11.11-12.60/1.5kg (RMB 75-85/1.5kg)

Peru: 2023 Could Be a Difficult Year for Blueberries From Peru (Jan 31)

The cultivation and export of blueberries in Peru face several challenges, such as the increase in freight costs and the cost of agricultural inputs. In W1 of 2023, 4.7K tonnes were exported from Peru, a decrease of 28% compared to the same period last season. Despite this, Peru exported 301.3K tons as far as W5, an increase of 27% compared to the previous season.

In Peru, since the end of 2022, protests that have taken place had adverse consequences for the agricultural sector due to roadblocks. In W4, Peru exported 17.7K tons, a decrease of 48% compared to the same period in 2022. The most affected shipments were those made through the port of Callao and Pisco.

Peruvian raspberry exports totaled 5.5 tons, with a value of USD 16K in 2022. Raspberries are considered a product with great potential in Peru, and are in a period of hectare expansion, especially in the Central and Northern highland of Peru. Blueberries are grown in Arequipa, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, and Lima.

In Egypt, the export and harvest season of strawberries started, with a remarkable turnout from foreign consumers due to the production quality. Egypt is one of the first countries in the world to produce and export the crop, as it ranks third in the world in terms of volume of production and the first in the world in terms of frozen exports.

The California strawberry industry is calculating the cost of the recent storm damages, with hundreds of acres damaged. The California Strawberry Commission estimated a value of approximately USD 200M in damages.

United States: Long-Term Impact of California Rains on Strawberries Unknown (Feb 1)

In W5, excessive rainfalls and atmospheric rivers seem to have stopped in California. Rainfalls started in early December and continued until January 27, 2023. Santa Maria, one of the key strawberry-growing regions, received 12.39 inches (314.7 mm) of rain since December 1 of last year.
