The mainland has suspended imports of pineapples from Taiwan due to concerns about quarantine pests, a decision that has been criticized by Taiwan authorities and media. This suspension could significantly impact Taiwanese farmers, as last year, Taiwan exported about 41,661 tons of fresh frozen pineapples to the mainland, accounting for 91% of the total export output value. The suspension could also affect other agricultural exports to the mainland, which accounted for 20.7% of the top ten destinations for Taiwan’s agricultural exports in 2020. The Taiwan authorities have responded by allocating NT$1 billion to support farmers and maintain income, and by planning to expand consumer markets for their agricultural products.
