Massive crop losses, transportation difficulties, and the crippling of farmers are the consequences of the increasingly severe droughts on the continent, which Hungary is increasingly feeling the effects of. The concept of drought can be precisely defined: it refers to a prolonged lack of precipitation accompanied by high heat. It primarily affects agriculture, and to an extensive degree, because approximately 90 percent of Hungary's territory is threatened by drought, with only the western and southwestern parts of the country being exceptions. Domestically, on average, 4 out of 10 years are marked by harmful water shortages, but for example, between 1986 and 1995, 7 drought years occurred, so the phenomenon is not new. In recent periods, we have been receiving news from other parts of Europe about extreme droughts, and in Spain, for instance, brush and forest fires have become regular occurrences in the summer due to the severe lack of precipitation.
