The president of the Andean Grains Committee of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Marisa Podestá Torres Llosa, proposed the exemption of the General Sales Tax (IGV) on quinoa, kiwicha, and cañihua, with the aim of promoting their domestic consumption and contributing to the fight against malnutrition in the country. It should be noted that rice and other grains –mostly imported– are currently exempt from the payment of the 18% IGV, so, she opined, a similar measure should be implemented for Andean grains, which are much more nutritious and of national origin. “By incorporating them into Appendix I of the TUO of the IGV Law, their final price would be reduced by around 18%, a key change for more families to access these foods produced by Andean family agriculture,” she commented.
