The Aquatic Animal Alliance, along with 119 other organizations, has urged Universidad Autonoma de Mexico to halt the operation of an octopus farm in Yucatan due to high mortality rates and concerns over animal welfare, biodiversity, environmental degradation, and public health risks. The farm, run by Universidad Autonoma de Mexico and Moluscos del Mayab, has a mortality rate of 52%, leading to worries about the potential negative impact on wild octopus populations and competition for food sources. The Aquatic Life Institute, a non-profit focusing on improving aquatic animal welfare, is advocating for research that supports octopus conservation and sustainable food sources, rather than unsustainable farming practices.
