Indonesia's National Food Agency (Bapanas) is pushing for an increase in domestic meat production to decrease dependence on imports and combat high meat prices. The agency is developing a commodity balance sheet, due for completion in December. Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has proposed the development of cattle farms in Sulawesi, Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara as a means to reduce beef imports. The Ministry of Agriculture is backing this initiative with a project for breeding Belgian blue cattle.
