Two documents under public consultation in Bulgaria are aiming to define the quality and source of cheese and yogurt products, aiming to support local milk production and increase the added value for Bulgarian producers. The proposed changes include removing VAT for native yogurt and white brine cheese, requiring suppliers to stock only products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) labels, and modifying the product names to align with European regulations. However, concerns about the lack of raw milk traceability and the limited number of producers under PDO have been raised, alongside potential conflicts with existing standards. The European Commission's registration of 'Bulgarian yogurt' and 'Bulgarian white brine cheese' as Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) marks a significant achievement for Bulgarian products, despite challenges related to consumer confusion and the need to balance these designations with existing standards.
