Beer sales in Germany fell by 6.3%, or 262 million liters, to approximately 3.9 billion liters in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), beer sales dropped below 4 billion liters for a six-month period for the first time since the time series began in 1993. These figures do not include non-alcoholic beers and malt beverages, nor beer imported from countries outside the European Union (EU). A similar sharp decline occurred only at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic German breweries and beer warehouses previously recorded a comparable decline in sales only at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in the first half of 2020 (-6.6% compared to the same period last year to 4.3 billion liters) and in the second half of 2023 (-6.2% to 4.2 billion liters). 81.9% of the total beer sales in the first half of 2025 were for domestic consumption and were subject to taxes.
