Blue Tongue disease is spreading among sheep and cow farms in Italy, with hundreds of outbreaks and thousands of animals dead in Sardinia, Piedmont, Lombardy, and Calabria, and other regions. The disease, transmitted by insects, causes the death of the animal but does not affect humans or milk and meat. The epidemic is causing a drop in milk production and economic damage to companies. Coldiretti is calling for institutional commitment to procure vaccines and implement solutions to protect the livestock supply chain. They also recommend strict controls on imports of live animals and the use of insect repellents to protect Italian farmers from the disease, which may have arrived from Northern Europe.
