The European Commission has approved Nueces de Nerpio de España as a new addition to the Register of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), making it the 1,627th protected agricultural product in the EU. These dried walnuts are sourced from the native Nerpio variety, grown in the Taibilla valley basin under a typical agroforestry environment in the southern Sierra de Segura since the 16th century. The approval highlights the adaptation and selection of this native fruit by local farmers, underscoring the importance of biodiversity and local agricultural practices.
