Bulgaria's Minister of Agriculture and Food, Giorgi Takhov, has appealed to the EU Council for action over the significant surge in egg imports from Ukraine, which has risen five-fold to 2,618 tons in the first half of 2024. The low import prices, he explained, are severely cutting into the profitability of Bulgarian egg producers and threatening the sustainability of local poultry farms. Despite previous EU protective measures, the situation persists, forcing Takhov to strike a balance between supporting Ukraine and safeguarding Bulgarian agriculture without leading to the financial ruin of local farmers.
