The Empresa de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (Emater) has started this year the first survey conducted by the company on cocoa production in Minas Gerais. The data began to be cataloged in March and show that the crop is gaining ground in the state. According to the survey conducted so far by the technicians of Emater-MG, the northern region of Minas Gerais has 480 hectares cultivated with cocoa, resulting in an estimated annual production of 161 tons. The company emphasizes that these numbers may increase, as new areas are yet to be identified. “We monitor more than 40 fruits in the territory, but we did not yet have cocoa in our study. The inclusion of the product in our surveys helps in the formulation of public policies and facilitates the identification of producing areas, if there is interest from buyers,” explains the technical coordinator of Fruit Farming at Emater-MG, Deny Sanábio.
