The Agriculture and Rural Development Minister of Cameroon, Gabriel Mbairobe, has launched the Producers' Desk, a mechanism to provide mass government subsidies to cocoa and coffee producers. The government's goal is to increase cocoa production to 640,000 tons and coffee production to 160,000 tons by 2030. The fiscal year 2021 budget for this initiative is FCFA 6.2 billion, with an expected growth to FCFA 50 billion in the next five years. The Minister highlighted insufficient funding as a challenge in the agricultural sector, which the Producers' Desk aims to address. Emmanuel Kamayou, a representative of producers in the South West Region, welcomed the move, citing challenges such as poor infrastructure, aging farms, and limited arable land that have hindered production.
