The Beira Interior Olive Oil Producers Association (APABI) has launched the Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa PGI, a protected geographical indication olive variety, to preserve and celebrate the supreme quality of Portuguese olives despite the challenges of low productivity and pest susceptibility. This olive is now on sale and can only be used by producers and processors in specific areas, adhering to set requirements. The PGI designation aims to increase the income of regional olive growers, prevent the abandonment of traditional olive groves, and potentially inspire new plantations. The Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa PGI is a table olive made with water and salt, following traditional regional techniques.
