The Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) has extended the suspension of controlled burns throughout the state until October 31. The decision, which directly impacts the management of sugarcane straw and prohibits agricultural and phytosanitary burns (such as pest control), was taken due to the prolonged dry period and the high risk of forest fires. The prohibition had been in effect since August 28 and, after the initial thirty-day period, was extended for another month. During the suspension period, Cetesb will not accept new requests for authorization to use fire in São Paulo. It is important to note that the burning of sugarcane straw was already subject to strict restrictions. The practice was only authorized on days with relative humidity above 30% and was prohibited between six in the morning and eight at night, the time of greatest risk of fire spread.
