The Chinese market has started accepting sweet cherry exports from Pakistan, specifically from the region of Gilgit-Baltistan, following the implementation of a bilateral phytosanitary protocol and the reopening of the Khunjerab Pass after a long closure due to the pandemic. However, the process of exporting cherries to China is challenging due to the need for cold processing and a shortage of necessary equipment in Gilgit-Baltistan. Despite these hurdles, Pakistani cherry producers are hopeful about the future of exports to China. The maintenance of the Khunjerab Pass all year round by Chinese snowplow crews is anticipated to boost trade and economic relations between China and Pakistan.
