China is facing a meat shortage, particularly pork, due to the African swine fever outbreak, and is expected to be short by 12 million tons of pork this year. To make up for this, the country has imported 1.3 million tons of beef in the first seven months of 2021, a 10% increase from the same period in 2020 and three times the volume from four years ago. The average price per ton of imported beef has also risen by 13% to $4,200 in July. Argentina is a significant supplier of beef to China, but export restrictions may impact trade. The ABC consortium is working with the Argentine government to find a solution to maintain exports.
