China signaled on Sunday (12) that it will not back down in the face of President Donald Trump's threat to impose an additional 100% tariff on the country and called on the United States to resolve differences through negotiations, not threats. "China's position is consistent," said the Ministry of Commerce in a statement. "We do not want a tariff war, but we are not afraid of one." It was China's first official comment on Trump's threat, made on Friday, 10, to raise the tax on Chinese imports by November 1, in response to new restrictions imposed by Beijing on the export of rare earths, which are vital to a wide range of consumer and military products. The exchange of accusations, however, threatens a possible meeting between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and may end the truce of a trade war that, in April, reached tariffs over 100% on both sides.
