Hungarian garlic farmers have experienced a decrease in cultivation area, down to 778 hectares in 2022, leading to a gap in domestic garlic production that necessitates significant imports, primarily from Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. The decrease in cultivation is attributed to increased production costs and the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Despite the importation of garlic from China, which is not reflected in foreign trade data, Hungary's production remains a fraction of that in Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.
