Colombian fishery products are experiencing a surge in international demand, with exports increasing by 1,591 tons to 4,105 tons in January compared to the same period last year. The total export revenue for these products also rose from US$25.1 million to US$29.3 million. In an effort to provide formal employment and social benefits to artisanal fishermen and aquaculture farmers, the Colombian government has launched a reform to formalize the fishing labor group. This initiative has seen over 19,600 artisanal fishermen and 1,600 aquaculture farmers formally register. Agriculture Minister Martha Carvajalino emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing the fisheries sector, supporting artisanal fishing, and integrating it with industrial fishing to boost Colombia's economy and international market presence.
