A survey by HAK in the Netherlands reveals that only 33% of the population considers legumes, such as brown beans, lentils, and kidney beans, as suitable meat substitutes. Despite this, the regular replacement of meat with beans can help families save hundreds of euros annually and reduce CO2 emissions. The 'Boonus calculator' developed by HAK calculates these cost savings and CO2 emissions reduction. The majority of Dutch consumers prefer brown beans, with chili con carne being their favorite bean dish. However, a significant number of consumers are unaware of the health benefits of legumes and need inspiration for cooking them. HAK is advocating for legumes to be given more prominence in supermarkets to encourage more people to include them in their diet.
