The UK government has announced two post-Brexit trials to allocate additional fishing quota to help support Cornish fishers. The first trial, the Cornwall Community Quota, will provide 240 tonnes of quota to fishers in the region, prioritizing new and larger vessel operators. The funds generated will be reinvested into the scheme to aid fishers. The second trial, the Quota Application Mechanism, will allow producer organizations with English members to apply for a share of the post-Brexit quota, with allocations based on environmental, economic, and social criteria. Both trials aim to sustain fishing stocks and benefit fishers, with applications for the Cornwall Community Quota Scheme expected to open soon, and the QAM trial in June.
