Deep-Sea Fishing Catch Volume Plummets in First Four Months of Year

Cumulative Catch Volume of 130,930 Tons Recorded Year-on-Year Decline of 30.2% Skipjack Tuna and Squid 'Significantly Underperform' The distant water fishery catch volume from January to April this year has decreased by approximately 30% compared to the previous year. According to the 'April 2025 Distant Water Fishery Production Trend' released by the National Institute of Fisheries Science on May 30, the cumulative catch volume through April is 130,930 tons, a 30.2% decrease from the same period last year (186,483 tons) and a 17.6% decline from the five-year average (157,958 tons). By fishing method, purse seine tuna fishing decreased to 63,987 tons, down 32.7% year-on-year and 22.4% from the average. Tuna longline fishing dropped to 12,775 tons, a 25% year-on-year and 2% average decline. Pole and line fishing fell to 21,765 tons, down 40.5% year-on-year and 20.9% from the average.
