Despite the slowdown, deforestation remains "too fast"

Deforestation and fires that reduce the global forest area have slowed down, but deforestation is still happening too quickly, especially in Brazil, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). According to the United Nations organization, "the annual net loss of forests fell from 10.7 million hectares in the 1990s to 4.12 million hectares in the period 2015-2025." It also specifies that "deforestation was reduced to 10.9 million hectares annually in the period 2015-2025, compared to 17.6 million in the period 1990-2000. The rate of forest expansion also decreased, from 9.88 million hectares annually in the period 2000-2015 to 6.78 million in the period 2015-2025." While referring to the "complexity of land use dynamics," the FAO does not give detailed reasons for deforestation.
