The European Commission has approved two new genetically modified (GM) crops, maize and cotton, for import to be used in food and feed, but not for cultivation. It has also renewed the authorisation of two GM maize varieties for human and animal consumption. These decisions, which are valid for 10 years, were made after a thorough assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) which found the GM crops to be as safe as conventional ones. The Commission stressed that any product derived from these GM crops will be subject to strict EU rules on labelling and traceability.
