Egypt is developing new types of rice that require less water and can tolerate environmental changes, as part of the National Project for the Development of Hybrid Rice Production. The Giza Basmati 201 hybrids and an Egyptian Basmati rice variety 11 are expected to yield over 4 tons and 5.5 tons per acre respectively. Dr. Hamdi Al-Mawafi, the project's head, has received a gold medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2022 for developing the giant Sakha Super 300 rice variety, which is also high-yielding, salinity-tolerant, and uses less water. The rice crop this year is expected to yield between 6 and 7 million tons.
