From April 1 to May 14, 2023, the European Commission (MARS Bulletin) reported mixed meteorological conditions that impacted EU crop yields. Despite some areas experiencing dryer or wetter than average conditions, the majority of regions are expected to have a good yield outlook. However, the Iberian Peninsula is experiencing significant drought, leading to decreased yield forecasts for all major crops. Excess rainfall and colder temperatures in regions from Ireland to Bulgaria and Ukraine have delayed the planting of summer crops. While this excess rainfall poses challenges for field operations, it has also resulted in favorable soil moisture and groundwater levels. At the EU level, expected yields for 2023 are higher than the average of the last 5 years for all productions except durum wheat and spring barley.
