The European Union's (EU) dairy consumption is projected to remain stable in 2023, despite a slight decrease in milk production, according to the EU's Short-Term Agricultural Outlook. This is due to increased milk production and higher fat and protein content of milk. However, over-stocks from 2022 could lead to a decline in butter and skim milk powder production. The cheese and whey processing stream is expected to be favored due to export potential and stable domestic consumption. Dairy prices are expected to continue a downward trend due to high seasonal availability and existing stocks. The dairy herd is predicted to decline by 1% due to falling raw milk prices, which could be offset by increased production assuming normal weather conditions. There is anticipation for a recovery in import demand from China, which could boost EU export growth.
