In the first half of 2024, EU Member States' watermelon imports fell by 34.59% compared to 2023, with Spain and Morocco experiencing significant export declines of 51.81% and 50.31%, respectively. Conversely, Costa Rica and Senegal increased their exports by 20.39% and 14.61%, while the Netherlands saw a 6.49% rise in re-exports. Despite the reduced import volumes, Spain remains the largest financial beneficiary, followed by Morocco and the Netherlands. The decline is attributed to economic factors like inflation, logistical disruptions, and fluctuating demand, possibly indicating a shift towards local production in some EU countries.
