Calf mortality in Brazil represents an annual loss of nearly 5 million heads (between birth and weaning), which equates to a loss of approximately R$ 10 billion. To combat this cycle, the Cada Bezerro Importa program, from BE.Animal, was created with a set of actions focused on the training of cowhands and the implementation of good animal welfare practices and responsible management in the field. In an interview with Giro do Boi, the veterinary doctor and Doctor of Animal Science Janaína Braga, from BE.Animal, explains that the main causes of losses are diseases and management accidents, both of which are correctable. The program, which began with research on farms in Mato Grosso, Bahia, and São Paulo, validated that it is possible to reduce mortality by up to 30% just by refining management protocols.
