Taiwan has eased import restrictions on US beef and pork in early 2021, marking a significant expansion in market access for American farmers. This development makes Taiwan the sixth largest market for US beef, with trade exceeding $500 million. The new rules allow the import of beef from US cattle of any age and set maximum residue limits for ractopamine. However, the implementation of Country of Origin Labeling for pork has sparked controversy, with the main opposition party, KMT, vowing to oppose the measure, potentially slowing down US pork exports to Taiwan. Despite this setback, the US Meat Export Federation remains optimistic, citing the advanced knowledge of US pork safety among Taiwanese buyers and the tendency of similar controversies to resolve amicably in the past.
