The National Agricultural and Animal Health Service of Peru (Senasa) is urging livestock producers to step up biosecurity and hygiene measures following the Yaku cyclone, to prevent outbreaks of anthrax and bovine rabies. Anthrax is particularly risky in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Lima Callao, Ica, Moquegua, Tacna and Áncash regions, due to the exposure of Bacillus anthracis spores from the cyclone's rains. Meanwhile, bovine rabies, spread by common bats, poses a significant threat in several regions. Additionally, bovine brucellosis, a disease that affects bovines and can be transmitted to humans, has been reported in eight regions. Senasa is implementing vaccination campaigns and health programs to combat these diseases.
