In June 2024, the Biobío Region of Chile experienced a dramatic decline in fish landings, with a total of 38,177 tons, marking a decrease of 68.8% from the previous year. The region's fish landings accounted for 18.0% of the national total, with fish being the primary species. The artisanal subsector witnessed an 88.6% drop, contributing 12.2% of the regional total, and the industrial subsector accounted for 87.8%, experiencing a 58.9% decrease. This downturn is part of a larger trend, with national artisanal landings decreasing by 29.5% and industrial landings by 57.0% year-over-year. From January to June 2024, the region saw a 23.6% contraction in landings, with the artisanal subsector experiencing a 55.1% decrease and the industrial subsector showing an 8.9% increase.
