French farmers have made significant strides in reducing the backlog in the sowing of winter grain crops, as reported by Zerno On-Line and FranceAgriMer. As of November 4, winter barley was sown on 78 percent of the planned area, a decrease of two percent from the previous year and nine percent from the five-year average. Soft wheat was sown on 62 percent of the plan, three percent behind last year and 15 percent behind the five-year average. Hard winter crops were sown on 10 percent of the territory, four and 13 percent less than previous years respectively. The area under corn increased from 25 to 58 percent in 17 days.
