Italian fruit and vegetable exports experienced a significant recovery in the first quarter of 2023, with volumes increasing by 6.5% and values surging by over 10.7% compared to the same period in 2022. The value of vegetables and legumes saw a notable increase of 20.8%, and citrus fruits also performed well with a growth of 15.6%. However, the dried fruit sector saw a reduction in export values despite a rise in volumes. The import of tropical fruit also saw a sharp decrease in volume but a slight increase in values. Marco Salvi, the president of Fruitimprese, emphasized the need to boost consumption, but expressed disappointment with the European Union's proposed budget for promotional activities, stating that it does not align with its pro-consumption strategies.
