Between 2012 and 2019, the organic small fruit area in Germany doubled to 3,000 hectares, accounting for 32% of the total small fruit area. The increase is primarily due to berry varieties grown for processing. In 2020, the organic blueberry area expanded by 323 hectares, making it the largest share of organic for the fresh market. However, production in 2020 was 16% lower due to drought and late night frosts. German households have purchased five times as much organic soft fruit in the last five years, with blueberries driving the increase. Despite this, domestic supply cannot meet demand, with most small fruit coming from Spain, South Africa, Peru, and Chile.
