Germany's rapeseed meal exports have seen a 22% decrease from the previous year, reaching the lowest level in three years with a volume of 1.5 million tonnes from July 2021 to May 2022. This decline is attributed to both lower production by German oil mills and high market prices, making it less appealing for international buyers. While traditional markets like the Netherlands, Spain, and France have reduced their imports, countries such as Denmark, Finland, and Switzerland have increased their orders. The Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants e.V. (UFOP) highlights that this domestic feed is crucial for dairy cattle, especially with concerns about potential reductions in biofuels from cultivated biomass. UFOP is advocating for the continued processing of rapeseed into biodiesel to ensure the supply of this feed protein.
