Nigerian farmers are awaiting the release of genetically modified maize (TELA) that can resist insects and drought, as they struggle with crop losses due to pests and inadequate fertilizer. The TELA maize, which has shown to yield up to 7.5 tonnes per hectare, could significantly boost farmers' income and reduce the need for pesticides. The product is under review by the National Biosafety Management Agency and is expected to be available to Nigerian farmers by the wet season of 2023.
