According to this international non-governmental organization, 29 countries planted fourteen biotech crops in 2019, a year in which Latin America saw a significant increase in the production of GM varieties. The top five producers are the USA (corn, soy, cotton, alfalfa, rapeseed, beet, potato, papaya, pumpkin and apples), Brazil (soy, corn, cotton, and sugar cane), Argentina (soy, maize, cotton and rapeseed), Canada (rapeseed, soybeans, corn, beets, alfalfa and potatoes) and India (cotton). Portugal and Spain remain the only ones in Europe to produce GMOs (Bt maize) and Australia is the only one in the world to produce GM saffron. In Africa, Bt cotton was first planted in Malawi, Ethiopia and Nigeria in 2019. Currently, six African countries are producing this variety. The ISAAA estimates that in 2019 around 26% of the world population benefited from the production of crops improved by genetic engineering techniques.
