President Joko Widodo of Indonesia is encouraging the community to plant crops like sorghum to avert a potential food crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war. Sorghum, which was cultivated in Indonesia since 1970 across regions like Java, South Sulawesi, and East Nusa Tenggara, is a versatile plant with various uses such as food, animal feed, and industrial raw materials. It is also a good source of niacin, thiamin, vitamin B6, iron, and manganese, and is gluten-free. The Ministry of Agriculture is planning to develop 5,000 hectares of sorghum, highlighting its suitability for hot and dry areas. Indonesia does not currently rank among the top sorghum-producing countries, with the United States, Nigeria, Sudan, and Mexico being the leading producers.
