The European grape market is experiencing a shortage as Peru has exported a significant portion of its grape harvest to the US, potentially displacing South Africa in the Far East. Peru's grape exports to Europe, which are mainly packed in larger cartons, have increased over the past decade, making it a formidable competitor for South African grapes. The European market is currently emptying as about 40% less grapes from Peru and Brazil have been shipped, but it is expected to remain strong until week 2 or 3. The parity between the euro and the dollar also has a huge impact on exporters' earnings and shipping costs, which have not increased despite rates not reaching pre-pandemic levels. Leon de Kock of Grape Alliance highlights the logistical challenges facing the global grape sector.
