The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) in Zambia is calling on the government to provide a clear status update on the implementation of the Maize/Mealie Meal Export & import MOU with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which was signed in 2019. The agreement aims to ensure food security and improve trade and economic ties by setting targets for Zambia to export 200,000 Metric tons of maize and 400,000 Metric tons of mealie meal annually to the DRC. The CTPD is pushing for transparency regarding the export schedule and the involvement of local small-scale farmers, highlighting the importance of the MOU in providing alternative export markets for these farmers. The organization also emphasizes the need for the government to fulfill its procurement obligations and share the MOU roadmap to facilitate stakeholder participation.
