The article highlights the challenges facing Moldovan tomato farmers in 2023, with the cultivation area expected to decrease due to an energy crisis and a brain drain. The energy crisis has led to a strategic hoarding of fuel, resulting in only those with sufficient energy resources planning production. Furthermore, the mass migration of the able-bodied population from Moldova in 2021 and 2022 has led to a shortage of seasonal labor, forcing farmers to limit the production of annual crops. Other issues such as water scarcity and decreasing purchasing power of the population will also impact the agricultural sector. Under these circumstances, Moldovan vegetable growers are pivoting their focus towards producing vegetables for daily use and the foreign market, particularly those in the 'borscht set'.
