The European Union imported 141 thousand tonnes of beef from Mercosur countries last year, which made up over half of its imports from outside the EU. However, it did not import any dairy products from Mercosur countries last year. The European Commission has agreed to an import quota for beef from Mercosur countries, allowing them to supply over 54,450 tonnes of fresh and chilled beef and over 44,550 tonnes of frozen beef to the EU. Tariffs on these beef imports will be reduced to 7.5%. The EU has also made concessions for dairy products from Mercosur countries, allowing them to supply 30,000 tonnes of cheese and 10,000 tonnes of skimmed milk powder. Import duties on these dairy products will be gradually reduced over nine years.
