The Hungarian Association of Fruit and Vegetable Growers (FruitVeB) has forecasted that the country's apple harvest in 2024 will be significantly lower than the previous year, estimating an output of 330 thousand tons with a potential range of +/- 10%. This would make it the second lowest harvest in ten years, following 2022's record of 280 thousand tons. The decrease is attributed to unfavorable weather conditions, including drought, heat, and various types of damage, which have led to smaller fruit size and increased scab and needle dieback infestations. These conditions have also forced some apples intended for the table market to be reclassified as industrial, due to the need for processing. The severity of the impact varies depending on the type of cultivation and the use of irrigation.
